Chinook Salmon fishing offshore can be in one word outstanding. While on your Canada fishing trip here in Port Renfrew you will see why our offshore fishery is so popular with anglers. First we do not use flashers or bait offshore we use Tomic Plugs or Tomic Spoons. This keeps the drag down on the fish so their energy level stays high for a longer time, in turn giving you a longer fight. Although when fishing the coastline you will find the Chinook fight hard in the shallower water. The flasher in front of their face can make the Chinook take outstanding first runs. Offshore Chinook are very bright and clean salmon as they are not near their natural spawning rivers. We also catch what we call Ivory Chinook (Ivory flesh) this is to do with their diet. It has a higher content of fat, but the good type of fat full of omega 3. These Ivory Chinook fight hard in fact they are the best fighting salmon out there, not sure why but my guess is that their diet of Herring, Anchovies and Squid makes them work harder for their food. With other Chinook we see them feed on krill and shrimp more so than Herring, Anchovies and Squid, not to say that red flesh Chinook will not take an easy meal of Herring and Anchovies. As anglers we know that is not the case, but your bait must look injured.
