Halibut Season.
It all depends on what you want in size. Halibut open back up on Feb 1st, they are closed in the month of Jan. In the first 4 months of the season you will find large fish more often. The females have layed their eggs out in the deep and have headed in closer to shore to rest and feed. This is when you will see large Halibut 60 to 200 plus pounds coming into the local marina's around Port Renfrew, Sooke and Victoria. I start fishing for large Beasts in March, weather can play a role in Port Renfrew at that time. Last season was great fishing for the large Halibut, I found that April thru May was much more productive. Now in late May early June we start to see the smaller Halibut move in all around Swiftsure Banks. This is when fishing goes nuts. It is a biomass of Halibut that move on to the Banks, we had days when our clients where catching all of their Halibut trolling with plugs or spoons. These halibut where taken on salmon gear trolled around 100 to 160 feet deep with the bottom being 200 or deeper. We caught one 80 lbs at 60 feet fishing in 160 ft of water. Lots of days last year we caught all of our halibut trolling for salmon, what a Blast ! Fishing for these smaller but great eating Halibut lasts well into Sept. The average Halibut size is18 lbs in July & Aug. We can also go fishing for a little larger Halibut. I have a few places to fish where the Halibut can be 30 to 70 lbs. When fishing for these Halibut it takes time, after a few drifts I can normally tell if its going to happen that day.
